It was always present for important celebrations and holidays- Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and <em>every<\/em> birthday. Often with matching napkins, the tablecloth set the tone for a happy, festive ocassion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tablecloth served to frame the meal.  An elegant, damask cloth was unfolded, carefully smoothed and arranged over the table. Next, elegant china and silverware were placed around each place setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As children,  we were encouraged to help fold napkins and place them folded edge along the left side of the dinner plates. This small task made us feel important and I think it also helped us to remember the family tradition. There is an every-day table covering; often plastic which serves to protect the table beneath. But not for the afternoon and evening meals, this covering will be exchanged for a <em>tablecloth<\/em>. The tablecloth need not be fancy; usually it is cotton and often brightly colored. Its appearance signals the family meal is in preparation. Shortly, everyone will take their seats at the table and begin to enjoy fresh food, wine and chit-chat or<em> &#8216;chiacchiere&#8217;<\/em>. This daily ritual is grounding and familiar; it evokes a <em>&#8216;this is home&#8217;<\/em> feeling. The Italian tablecloth says the family meal is important, always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to admit that I don&#8217;t use a tablecloth every day.  For those special times celebrating birthdays, holidays and good news, one of us will choose our favorite tablecloth from the linen closet.
